A Message To Ma!

Sajeda Tamanna Hussain

People say life is a gift and that every day of this life is beautiful in its own way. But can anyone tell me, which is the most beautiful day of the three hundred and sixty five days of each year? While all of you are busy pondering my question, let me relieve you of the trouble and answer it myself! I do not know how many of you would agree with me (and I dare to say this, because I know most of you would), but to me, it is definitely the second Sunday of the month of May! The day which we all recognize as International Mother's Day!

A mother is someone in whose court, her judgment is always biased towards the well being of her children. As the saying goes in Bengali, 'Kushontan jodio ba hoy, kumata kodapi noy.' Then why does it happen so often that we barely ever spare five minutes from our everyday life to walk up to that beloved mother, hold her hand gently in ours, and convey to her, the message of gratefulness, of love, of admiration? This is the irony of the 21st century. In a world where cell phones and internet have made sure I am up to date with every little detail regarding my friends, I probably don't even have enough time to ask that one person living in the same house with me, whether she has had dinner or not. I know somebody who knows exactly which year, which month, which date and even what time her favourite celebrity was born. Sadly enough, she had forgotten her mother's birthday last year because she was so engaged arranging for her best friend's fair well party!

I am not saying it should be made punishable by law, to not appreciate that one lady in the house who appreciates us the most. It is just that, for all those times, when we forgot to thank her for that bed she laid for us, we forgot to hug her after she was exhausted through all day's work, we forgot to tell her how much we love her for being who she is, we should take today as an opportunity to be that little child again, for whom, his/her mother was the entire world!

Speaking of being little, one of the most beautiful memories of my childhood that I share with ma was how much she encouraged me with every good thing I did. I was not very steady with my drawing skills till very late. I would try very hard to draw trees, but they always ended up looking like green monsters! In fact, I had to confirm myself that I had actually drawn a tree by writing down, 'A tree', right beneath my drawing. However, when I showed it to ma, she would always tell me how beautiful my 'trees' were! As she continued to compliment my hideous monsters, I finally learned to tell myself that mom had an extremely bad taste in drawing! Be it tree monsters or exam nights, mothers are always there to give their child the strength to move on and fight his/her shortcomings and become a complete human being. In most of our lives, we have one person in this whole wide world to love us beyond any conditions and that is undoubtedly our mother.

To add a little fun to this article, I asked a friend to tell me five interesting facts about his mother. Here they go, 'She never spends for herself unless dad specifically asks her to do so, she does not know Eminem, she hates my two tone trousers, she never takes lunch unless my brother and I are both back home, and she knows exactly what I want just by the expression on my face.'

Sounds like your mother doesn't she? Well, now that you have almost finished reading this article, have you decided what you are going to do for her to let her know that you really care? Just go to her and smile first! That does half of your work because her ultimate purpose in life is to see you happy. Then tell her 'Ma, I don't say this to you everyday because I want it to sound special when I do! And today is the day when I need to tell you how much I love you and thank you for being there as my best friend, my Ma. Happy Mother's Day, Ma!'

This one's for you, Ma. 'Happy Mother's Day!'
