In my end is
my beginning

Sharmin Khan Pinky

IN my end is my beginning,” with this belief in heart, the students of the Department of English of Jahangirnagar University gave an enthusiastic and colourful farewell on 30th July to the students of 30th batch. This time the department organized a lively and splendid cultural event. Students from all the current batches participated in the event. There were songs, recitation, and dances performed by the students. The decoration of the stage was outstanding. Everyone put forward a wonderful effort.

The farewell programme acknowledged and appreciated the excellence and enthusiasm displayed by the students of Batch 30 during their student life. The programme was distinctly divided in two parts. In the inaugural part, teachers of the department delivered their valuable speeches. Then some students from 30th batch shared their feelings and experience with the audience. The first phase of the programme ended with the speech of the Chair of the Department, Dr. Shamshad Murtoza. His speech provided vigour and enthusiasm to the students of the leaving batch.

The cultural event began with the photo montage. It was a farewell gift of Assistant Professor Mashrur Shahid Hossain to the students of 30th batch. This slide show reflected the journey of 30th batch from their innocence to experience, which showed their journey from the 1st year to the final year. Everyone became nostalgic and it created a melancholic environment.

Then the mainstream of the programme began. At first there was a chorus song performed by the students of 32nd batch. Then there was a solo performance by Achinta of 32nd batch. After that we got to see a splendid dance number presented by Roushni, Shipa and Mitu of 33rd batch and then there were more performances by the students from all the current batches. The chairman of the department Dr. Shamshad Murtaza and Lecturer Farzana Zebeen Khan also performed in the cultural programme.

Every end paves the way for a new beginning. The end of something gives a new ray of hope, a new inspiration to do something even greater. It was a wonderful evening and at the end it left the audience spellbound.

Friendship Day

Tahmina Khan

TO me FRIENDSHIP is such a heavenly gift that it cannot be defined in some plain and simple words. In our life we meet many friends and each of them is special in their own particular ways. So, this small word 'friendship' bears huge meaning to me. Over the years some friends have gone so far away, some faces have become hazy. But every year the 1st Sunday of August 'The Friendship Day' comes with the flash of all those faces once again. In my heart I thank all of them who took out time to listen to me, shared my feelings, gave me support when I was down, corrected me when I was wrong and above all for being a part my life. I wish to say to all of them-

“Ayee arektibar aye re tora praner majhe aye
Mora sukhe dukhe kotha kobo Pran jurobe tae”

I think friendship can be proved to be a true one when friends are ready to sacrifice anything for each other and when friends always extend their hands to help each other. Every year Friendship Day comes to remind us the real meaning of friendship. So on this very special day let us make a promise to help and sacrifice for our dear friends to remember the significance of friendship and to show respect to this wonderful relationship called 'Friendship'.
