Tale of a Tragedy - a response

Farhat Tasannum Farah

A few days back, there was an article by a student of Electronic Engineering of IUT in Star Campus. The article was about a sad real story of their excursion to Sylhet entitled “Tale of A Tragedy”.

When I read that, I could not stop crying. Such a pathetic end of a young and promising student!

“Sharique” was the name of that young boy who faced his tragic end when life was only beginning to bloom with all its splendour. Like the others he did not come back alive from his tour to Jaflong, Sylhet. It is a sudden blow to the entire family, but I felt that it is not only a tragedy for his friends or a shock for his family, but also a shameful failure of the BDR men or of those who could have at least tried to save this young life.

The incident happened because of the deep holes that are left after picking the stones up from the riverbed at Jaflong.

This article reminded me of my experience of similar nature when I visited Jaflong for the first time in my life, (at the age of 7). I also started walking towards the crystal clear water of the river; the water level was hardly up to the level of my toes. Suddenly I discovered myself drowning under the water! Water had already entered through my mouth and nose!! There was a whole of about 4 feet where I slipped down and could not keep my balance and fell down! That very moment I felt as if I was dead. But my parents and others picked me up.

I still remember that day which make me afraid of water even today and I always try to keep myself away from water! After reading about Sharique, who was not as lucky as I was, I became upset. And this should really not happen anymore to anyone! There should be instructions and some prohibitions for entering this dangerous spot. If “signboards cannot be put up on rivers” (according to those BDR men), then Caution Boards should be set up just on the entrance and along the riverbank.

Jaflong is one of the most beautiful places I always want to visit. But sometimes beautiful things can turn out to be dangerous too!

A step of Biotech at
Khulna University

Md. Mahmudul Hasan Razib

TO decipher the fundamentals of Biotechnology among the science-inclined young generation, BioTech Magazine, a science publication by the students of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Discipline of Khulna University organizes regular science discussion sessions titled “BioTech: Prajanmo Bhabna”. This time BioTech Came up with its second sequel of Prajanmo Bhabna at St. Joseph School to familiarise the students with Genetically Modified (GM) crops, Recombinant DNA technology, cloning etc. More than hundred students of both shifts enjoyed the programme. While initiating the proceedings, Biotech members talked about evaluation of Biotechnology, cell biology, DNA technology, and different applied applications of Biotechnology. Animation and documentary shows on related topics made them curious.

Next, there was a specially designed quiz competition in which two groups of five members in each representing their respective shifts competed against each other. Headmaster of Khulna St. Joseph School and the former Editor of BioTech magazine Md. Abdullah Al Sazzad distributed awards among the winners of games and quiz competition. Former editor Asif Ahmed Lelin, current editor Jubayer Al Hossein, Exicutive editor Kazi Tanvir Ahmed Saimon were also present there.
