Drill on post disaster rescue

Dhaka University Rover Scout Group arranged a drill on post-disaster rescue operation on 13 October at the Arts Building of Dhaka University campus premises, which was international day for disaster reduction. The programme was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) Dr. A A M S Arefin Siddique and pro Vice-Chancellor Dr. Harun Ar Rashid. Rover scout leader Prof. Dr. Ramses Haq, Prof. Dr. Azizunnahar Islam, Mumit Al Rashid, and Omar Ali from Dhaka District Rover Scout were also present in the programme. The Rover Scouts of DU showed certain precaution measures, such as: how to extinguish fire, how to rescue people with the help of cable rope, how to shift people from demolished building to a safe building with rope, how to shift people to a safe place with the help of stretcher and how to give first aid to disaster affected people.

Prof. J. R. Choudhury to be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree

Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury, former Professor of Civil Engineering, BUET, and former Vice Chancellor, BRAC University, is going to receive the prestigious degree of Doctor of Engineering (Honoris Causa) from University of Manchester, UK. A special ceremony was held in Manchester on 20 October during which Dr. J. R. Choudhury, along with four other graduands, would be awarded Honorary Doctorate degrees in various fields. He is perhaps the first Bangladeshi to receive an Honorary Doctor of Engineering from a British University.

Prof. Choudhury has authored about 65 papers in international journals and conference proceedings related to inter alia tall buildings, low-cost housing, earthquake resistant design, cyclones and storm surges, retrofitting of structures, IT Applications and Policy. Prof. Choudhury has acted as Consultant to a large number of national and international agencies on projects related to tall buildings, industrial buildings, transmission towers, aircraft hangars, stadiums, ports and jetties, computerization of public and private sector organizations. He was a Member of Panel of Experts (advising the Government, the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and OECF, Japan) for the Bangabandhu (Jamuna) Bridge; he is now heading the Panel of Experts for Padma Bridge and several other projects.

He is a Fellow of Institution of Civil Engineers (U.K.) and is a Chartered Engineer, UK. He was also an Adviser (Minister) in the first Non-Party Caretaker Government in 1996 and was in charge of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Water Resources.

Daffodil Inter-University contest

Daffodil International University organised Daffodil Inter-University Computer Programming Contest on 16 October at the university auditorium. Professor Dr. M. Kaikobad led the programming contest as chief judge and Mr. Shariar Manjur acted as Director of the panel of judges. All the heads of the CSE Department of different universities including Professor Abu Lays worked and cooperated as the panel of judges. WiMax Service Provider Bangla Lion and On line Web cast organisation Comjagat.com came forward and extended their full cooperation to make the event successful.

The contestants had to solve 9 problems. Around 80 teams from different 30 Public and Private universities including Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka University, East West University, BRAC University, CUET, Eastern University, ULAB, Shahjalal Science and Technology University, Islamic University, Maolana Bhashani Engineering and Technology University, IIUC and Islamic International University of Technology.

“Shimpanji” and “Annihilator” team of BUET became champion and runner up while “Resonenance” team of Dhaka University took third place in the contest. The members of the Champion team of “Shimpanji” were Mahabubul Hassan, Shariar Rouf and Md. Shamiul Saif. The members of the runner up team were “Annihilator” Tasneem Imran Sanny, Aninda Dash and Muntasir Masuk. The members of the “Resonenance” team of Dhaka University were Md. Shiplu Hawoladar, Hasnaine Haikel, Ana Fariha. Prof. Dr. Aminul Islam, Vice Chancellor, Daffodil International University inaugurate the Programming Contest as the chief guest.

Later a prize distribution ceremony was held where Mr. Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman, Board of Governors, Daffodil International University and Lt. Col. (Retd.) Shafiul Haq Chowdhury, Chief Commercial Officer, Bangla Lion were present and distributed prizes among the winners. Professor Dr. Golam Mawola Choudhury, Convenor, Science and Technology Fair-2010, Prof. Dr. M Kaikobad, Chief Judge, Prof. Dr. A L Haque, Prof Dr. Syed Akter Hossain, Director, Programming Contest, Mr. Shariar Manjur, Director of Panel of Judges and others were present in the contest.

Seminar at Bangladesh University

Bangladesh University organised a daylong seminar on 'Outbreak of Anthrax in Bangladesh: Prevention and Cure' on 12 October at the university auditorium. The Chairman, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh Prof. Nazrul Islam was the chief guest in the programme. In his speech he said, “The Poor quality higher education in some private universities is much more dangerous than the lethal anthrax.” The seminar was organised to discuss the issues of poor quality education in universities.

Bangladesh University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Golam Ali Fakir chaired the function. National Prof. Dr. M. R. Khan, Director of Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), Prof. Dr. Mahmudur Rahman, Prof. Dr. M. Bahanur Rahman of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Prof. Dr. M. Anwar Hossain of Dhaka University, Dr. Wahiuddin Mahmood and Dr. Kohinur Begum also spoke at the seminar.

The idea of increasing the number of universities in both public and private sector was discussed, so that the growing number of students could pursue higher education at minimum cost locally. Among others, members of the Board of Trustees, teachers, students and officials of Bangladesh University attended the seminar.
