NDF BD Regional Debate Festival 2012

National Debate Federation, Chittagong, held the first IIUC NDF BD Regional Debate Festiva,l 2012, on May 18. Sponsored by Goalini. The festival included a colourful rally, model debates, seminars and workshops, public speaking competitions and a prize giving ceremony. Around 800 debate enthusiasts from 85 schools in 12 districts, under the Chittagong division, participated in this festival. A K M Shoiab, Chairman, NDF, BD, moderated the event.


Seminar on Human Rights Education at DIU

The Faculty of Law, Dhaka International University (DIU), organised a seminar on 'Human Rights Education in Bangladesh' on May 19 at CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka. Professor Mizanur Rahman, Chairman, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was the chief guest while Professor M Shah Alam, Chairman (Acting), Law Commission of Bangladesh, was the special guest at the seminar.

Dr Uttam Kumar Das, Associate Professor and Dean (Acting), Faculty of Law, DIU, presented the key note paper in which he recommended a National Policy on Legal and Human Rights Education, introduction of 'Human Rights' as an independent and inter-disciplinary subject.


SUB observed Course Completion Day

On May 15, the 13th batch of the Department of Pharmacy of State University of Bangladesh (SUB) observed the day on completion of their B Pharmacy (Honours) course at SUB. A total of 28 students observed this day with Professor Rebecca Banoo, Head, Department of Pharmacy, SUB, and Saiful Islam Pathan, Head of Academic Affairs of Department of Pharmacy and other teachers.


Walking 100 Miles

To achieve the 'President's Rover Scout Award', four scouts from the rover scout group of Titumir College, Dhaka, covered 100 miles from Dhaka to Netrokona by walking. They started their journey of four days from their college on May 20. During the journey they met district magistrates, district officers, police supers, editors of regional newspapers, and the Chairman of Union Parishad and spread awareness on issues like dowry, eve teasing, tree plantation, family planning etc.


Orientation of Undergraduate Students of NSU held

The orientation programme of Summer 2012 for the newly enrolled undergraduate students of North South University (NSU) was held on May 19 at NSU. Mohammed Shajahan, Chairman, Board of Trustees, NSU, was present as the chief guest. Dr Hafiz G A Siddiqi, Vice Chancellor, NSU, chaired the ceremony. He welcomed the newly enrolled students and thanked the guardians for trusting NSU. Chairs of the respective departments, students and guardians were present on the occasion.


Northern University Cup Golf Tournament held

Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) and Jessore Cantonment Golf and Country Club jointly arranged NUB Golf Cup Tournament at the Jessore Cantonment Golf and Country Club field recently. The final round and prize giving ceremony of the tournament was held on April 13. Major General Rezanur Rahman Khan, psc, GOC of Jessore Cantonment, was the chief guest while Professor Abu Yousuf Md Abdullah, Chairman, NUB Trust, was the special guest in the programme.


Seminar on Lalon at Stamford University Bangladesh

Lecturer Nandita Tabassum, Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Stamford University, Bangladesh, presented a paper on 'The representation of Lalon's philosophy in Bangladeshi Cinema' at a seminar organised by the department and Bangladesh Film Archive on May 15. Kamrun Nahar, Director General, Bangladesh Film Archive, was present as the chief guest.

The paper was on how Lalon's philosophy has been portrayed in four Bangladeshi movies. The discussants at the event were documentary filmmaker Manjare Haseen Murad and Dr Mohammed Jahangir Hossain, former Director of Bangladesh Film Archive.


BRACU marks Charles Dickens' birth

The Department of English and Humanities of BRAC University has arranged a 'Writing and Photography Competition' on the theme-- 'Street children of Bangladesh' to mark the bicentenary of Charles Dickens' birth. Entries must be submitted to enhcrt@live.com by June 15. The three best write ups (short stories, poems) and photographs will be awarded and published in RESONANCE, BRAC University's online creative writing journal. An intellectual discourse on Dickens will take place in the day-long conference on June 28.


Pro-Vice Chancellor of MMU, UK visits BUFT

Colin Renfrew, Dean of the Hollings Faculty and Pro-Vice Chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), UK, and Jane Ledbury, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Fashion Product Development, MMU, visited BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) recently. A discussion was held on how to develop academic and professional excellence and exchange of faculties, students and research staff, curriculum and product design development, joint exhibition and other academic activities between the two universities.
