ST. THOMAS UNIVERSITY:
A small liberal arts university with a big difference.

As Canada's only exclusively liberal arts university, St. Thomas University, or STU, offers interested students a unique chance to be part of an extremely welcoming and like-minded community. All this is situated in the friendly and historical city of Fredericton, New Brunswick.

A liberal arts education means that STU offers a wide range of majors in the areas of Social Sciences, Humanities, Sciences, and Fine Arts. Some of the school's most popular programs include Criminology, Journalism, English, Psychology, Economics, History, Human Rights, and International Relations.

STU has a long-standing tradition of educating leaders, including journalists and judges, a former Speaker of Canada's parliament, and even a famous former Prime Minister of Canada. For generations, families seek out STU as a place to send their children to prepare for distinguished careers.

A tremendous advantage to the learning experience is STU's small class sizes. Often as few as twenty in a class, students at St Thomas are encouraged to speak out, and participate in regular discussions with peers and professors in an intimate and relaxed setting. STU is about developing young minds, and its professors encourage their students to think critically, and develop their overall communication skills. A variety of teaching methods are implemented, including lectures, readings, class discussions, group activities, debates, research assignments, out-of-class writing, and online discussions.

Plenty of support
Worried about keeping up with your studies? Rest assured. St. Thomas has a range of different academic support services to provide students with the help they need. At the Writing Centre, students are paired with a graduate student who can help improve their writing skills, and successfully prepare course work for submission. Each STU student is also given the option of accessing up to two hours of free peer tutoring every week. Academic advisors are on hand to help students make their way through the sometime confusing world of cumulative GPAs, prerequisites, co-requisites and credit hours.

As an international student, you will also have access to a specialized International Student Advisor, who's job it is to assist new students through their transition to life and studies in Canada.

Life beyond the classroom
Speaking of 'life in Canada' for those students hoping to enrich their university experiences, St. Thomas also offers a great array of extra-curricular activities for students to take part in. Right on campus, students can hone their skills in such areas as debating, drama, journalism, community radio, or student government. In addition, social events and informal activities such as coffee houses and concerts liven up almost every evening and weekend. Each year in the spring, a large multicultural fair is held on campus, in which international students are encouraged to celebrate and share their cultures with the greater STU community.

Besides getting involved with on-campus activities, many St. Thomas students also take advantage of New Brunswick's countless outdoor activities. For those looking for adventure, the province is a great place to explore offering the chance to get up close with whales, kayak the world's highest tides, or discover the joys of sailing. Or, for those less ocean-oriented, a range of land bound activities also await, including golfing, hiking, and cross-country skiing.

A great place to be
Located on the banks of the scenic St. John River, New Brunswick's capital city of Fredericton is in itself a safe and inviting place to study, live, and work. And with plenty of walking/biking trails, convenient public transportation, and affordable taxi fares, getting around town from the university is easy as can be. There are four shopping malls in the city, as well as a vibrant downtown area, complete with local shops, tree-lined streets, and stately Victorian-style mansions. Every Saturday, the downtown area also plays host to a very popular farmers' market, in which local vendors fill the streets selling fresh produce and flowers, pastries, international cuisine, home-style breakfasts, handmade pottery, furniture, crafts, and jewellery. The whole community turns out for the fun.
