The Fleeting Charms of Winter

I loved last week's Star Campus! The issue had articles about everything wintry, starting from winter fashion for the students to winter sports such as Badminton. I especially loved the article titled 'The month of Pine Green, Snow White and Heart Red' by Sumaiya Ahsan Bushra. It was great to know how the Christian community of our country celebrate Christmas in their own style and people from all faiths rejoice the holy occasion. The article titled 'Pithas--The ultimate winter delicacy' by Rakibul Hasan was also a good one. It literally made my mouth water as I was going through the tasteful description of 'Dudh Chitoi Pitha'. All of these elements are parts of winter charms in Dhaka that stays for so little time and revives us every year to start freshly for a brand new year!

Humanity at Stake

The other day, I was going to college by bus. At the Purana Palton intersection, a couple of malnourished children got on the bus to beg from the passengers. The children wore grimy and smelly clothes and were trembling in cold. For some reason, one of the passengers got really angry with the children and started shouting at them. Soon, he started beating one of the kids. I was shocked to find that most of the passengers took his side and kept beating the children. It was obvious that those heartless people do not consider the street children as human beings. Although these children are citizens of this country, they are being treated like animals everyday. It makes me wonder if it is impossible to improve their lot. I hope that our humanity will soon allow us to contribute to our society the way we should.

To Change Society
For Better

The other day, I was walking down the street with a male friend of mine as he was dropping me back home around 10:30 at night. All of a sudden, in the middle of an empty road, a car stops right next to us. Our immediate thought was of a car full of boys trying to act over-smart and tease me or something. Turns out, it was completely the other way round. It was a car full of girls, who stopped to tease my friend! The both of us were quite amazed at the behaviour of those girls. We keep blaming the men for doing such ridiculous things, and it saddens me to see that the girls are turning on the same path! Society is changing and not for the better!

Qualification is a Must

The Government has made a decision for nationalisation of a number of primary schools across the country. However, some of those schools are suffering from lack of quality teachers and infrastructure. Moreover, there are also allegations of widespread corruption in recruitment of the teachers in those non government primary schools. Anecdotal evidence suggests a number of teachers in many primary schools lack the required qualification to be teachers. I firmly believe the authorities concerned should take every step to provide proper training to the primary school teachers, so that they can impart quality education to the students and the standard of our overall education system improves.
