IBA Invitational Debate 2012 ends with flamboyance

IBA Invitation Debate 2012 has been a celebration of logic and wit among the best minds of the nation with the participation of 39 teams from 19 universities all over the country, engaging in war of logic in both Bengali and English Debate. Organised by Institution of Business Administration Communication Club (IBACC), the curtain of the event rose on December 1, 2012. The event was sponsored by Mahusher Jonno Foundation and Coats Bangladesh and supported by Prothom Alo.

'Think, Communicate' – through this slogan, this event aimed at critical thinking and pledging the voice of the youth on different social issues. The topics of different rounds were based on burning issues of today; e g anti-pornography law, human rights, corporate practices, trade union for RMG sector of Bangladesh, role of Megastores in underdeveloped countries, impact of Palestine's being a free state on Middle East peace process, rise of a third power in the politics of Bangladesh etc. After a tough fight in the English Debate final, BRAC University shined to become the champions, and IBA-University of Dhaka secured the runners up position defeating North South University and Islamic University of Technology on the motion, ‘This house would audit and publish the cost of war on terrorism’. Ratib Mortuza was selected as the best speaker of the final and Gaushey Shahriar got the accolade as the best speaker of the tournament. In the Bengali debate, Dhaka University Debating Society, ‘Shoparjito Shadhinota’ defeated United International University in the final round to be the champion on the topic 'Only strict law can prevent the misuse of internet and social media.'

Omar Faruk Fahim and Ariful Haq received the award for best speaker of the final and best speaker of the Bengali tournament respectively. In the Prize giving ceremony held on December 20, 2012, the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) of University of Dhaka, Professor Dr Shahid Akthar Hossain was present as the chief guest and Director of the institute, Professor Dr G M Chowdhury presided over the ceremony. The Moderator of the club, Melita Mehjabeen expressed her vote of thanks to all the participants, adjudicators and supporters of the event. The prize giving ceremony was followed by a grand dinner.
