NSU English Club Organizes Harry Potter Afternoon
Nadia Kamal Al- Siraj
The North South University English Club has always been unique in the different types of activities they organize. The “Harry Potter afternoon- Café Reading” was organized by the English Club on the 31st of July, 2007. The event was a great treat amidst the academic pressure of the ending semester for all the “crazy” Harry Potter Fans at NSU.
The event was well organized and the venue was interestingly and creatively decorated from top to bottom with pictures of Harry Potter, all the different series of the Harry Potter books, paintings and drawings everything that help in giving a “spooky” look and creating an ambience of the “Wizard world.”
Right after the program started, the club president presented a question with four answer options for everyone, and based on the answers the audience gave, they were divided into four groups by the club members. The four groups/ houses were: Raven Claw, Huffle Puff, Slytherina, and Gryffindor. There were two rounds/ sessions of Quiz on “Harry Potter and his Friends.”
In the first round, the club members asked questions from Harry Potter Books/ Story to the audience, and in the second round the divided groups made questions for asking the other groups. Everyone was amazed to see the competition and the enthusiasm of all the Harry Potter fans while they were answering. After what seemed like ages of Harry Potter fights, Gryffindor topped the 1st round whilst Huffle Puff topped the second round. However, after the tallied scores, Gryffindor emerged victorious.
Another unexpected thing that added to the amazement of the program was having a Harry Potter look alike in the audience indeed a very pleasant surprise! He was asked to cut a birthday cake that was brought for celebrating Harry Potter's birthday by his all- time fans.
The event ended with a small “café reading” session where some of the members and some students readout their favorite segment from their favorite Harry Potter series and discussed the story and events and their own perceptions about the storyline.
