On the 6th of August, State University of Bangladesh observed its first convocation at Bangladesh-China Friendship conference centre. Shortly after the convocation procession entered the hall at 11 am, honourable President of People's Republic of Bangladesh and Chancellor of State university of Bangladesh Prof. Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed declared the convocation open, which was followed by welcome address by Dr. M S Ilyas Dhami (acting Vice chancellor of SUB), convocation speeches by Prof. S.M.A Faiz (VC of DU), speeches by the Valedictorian, addresses by Dr. A.M Shamim (president of the board of governors of SUB), and by Prof. Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed.

There was a brief presentation of the graduating candidates by the respective Deans to the Honourable Chancellor for conferment of degrees and award of gold medals by Honourable Chancellor. Towards the end there was a vote of thanks by Dr. Md. Mahbubur Rahman (Vice president of Board of Governor of SUB).

"This is our first convocation and we are making history today for SUB. Most of you came to us with the hope that you would know more at the end of your stay than you did at the beginning. Graduates, your responses in the classroom have had an effect on us and have pushed us to be better. Just as we hope to have pushed you to do your best "knowledge is the ultimate power and the optimal professional skill is your economic security in the context of world we live" even after 30 years in your profession, if you are still building the fountain of knowledge and enhancing your skill, then you will be a genuine winner." Said Dr. M S Ilyas Dhami (acting Vice chancellor of SUB) in his message.

State University of Bangladesh is striving to become one of the top universities in the South Asian Region by providing need-based education to meet the ever-increasing demand for quality skilled professionals. SUB has already shown its immense contribution in the field of education. Its primary mission is to provide tertiary education at a reasonable cost, academic excellence in a range of subjects that are particularly relevant to human resources development for Bangladesh and community at large, with the intention that its graduates are high in demand in the market. The ideal teaching and learning environment offered by SUB help the students to achieve their career objectives. Moreover, the unique blend of national and international curricula equip our students/graduates to face professional challenges beyond the national shores and bring pride to the nation.

SUB provides a challenging academic environment by inspiring intellectual and artistic curiosity and creativity in teaching and research. They preach academic freedom and lively discourse and believe that the curricula should be consistently assessed and evaluated to match the national and international requirements for sustainable growth. The integrated system for teaching, research and services is of prime importance to SUB family.

I fervently hope that as the prime mover of creating efficient and capable human resources, Universities have a great role to play in imparting quality education to the students so that they can face the challenges confidently and efficiently. I urge the authority to come forward in this regard. On the happy occasion of this convocation I extend my heartfelt felicitations to the graduating students, their parents, guardians, and the university family and wish them a bright future."

Bugs at the Labs

Nafijur Rahman Wasi

Despite different constraints it sounds good to know that well-equipped and modern computer laboratories have already been established and are in operation in many departments. More specifically, The Faculty of Business Studies of University of Dhaka has installed computer laboratory facility along with computers and multimedia projectors in every single classroom almost from the very onset of BBA & MBA courses. Almost all the courses run by this particular faculty require the effective and practical use of different office software as an inevitable part in preparing the reports, assignments, term papers, multimedia presentations etc. Therefore, students of this faculty need to access this vital resource every now and then.

What has been the most alarming threat for the computer system prevailing in the labs is the rampant existence of VIRUS. Immediately after connecting the pen drives with the computers, VIRUS (Specially the 'TROZAN') goes into that storage device. Eventually the VIRUS spreads over the PCs of the students. Another matter of grave concern is that the documents prepared using these VIRUS-attacked computers get error signals or messages whenever trying to open these up in another computer. This is really a great problem for the students when they find their important documents missing or not opening at the time of necessity.

So this is to draw the attention of concerned authorities that they would take real-time measures for a possible way-out from this burning inconvenience of the students and other users.
