Leadership qualities make one stand out in a crowd

Professor Dr. Haripada Bhattacharjee

We are living in an era of rapid and constant change. To face the fast changing and dynamic element of business, two "mantras" are imperatives for business students. One element is the linking of business students to retain what they learn. Students need a strategy to help their needs, for which business students must update their own information system, because information minimises the gap between learning and real life experiences. Second element is the smart communication with entrepreneurs who assist by employing the graduates. These are the two secrets to success that students should learn by heart.

The Job Fair of the 9th batch students of the students of the Department of Marketing, DU held on July 07-09 on the premises of the Faculty of Business, is perhaps a clear manifestion of a need well defined. They got to learn it from the BBA 8th batch which was equally a flamboyant success. The outcome is very simple; how to face in proper way the requirements of competitive corporate houses including the MNCs who exploit merits, by paying higher salary compared to domestic companies but eventually successful entrepreneurs. My above statement is no way misleading and must not be misunderstood. In my 25-year teaching experience, I understood that in real life money matters. Perhaps, many students are not acquainted with the name of Nobel Prize winner in Economics- Milton Friedman who, asserted that the "only business ethics is how to maximize profit".

Without any doubt it can be said that academic excellence is not enough to ensure a quality job that increments better standard of living. The two-day "Job Fair" which was intensely crowded and when thousands of CVs were dropped, is a vivid manifestation that leadership qualities make one stand out in a crowd.

The students of the 8th and 9th batch of BBA students of the Marketing Department, DU, once again tried to prove that without a channel to exchange ideas and interactions with big corporate houses, textbooks curriculum does not comply with market trends. A close association between the corporate houses and students is thus needed to
enhance ones' success.

Job Fair itself alone is not enough to attract thousands of CVs. Any such fair demands a superb blend of other factors including the entertainments that lack in Bangladesh. Such a big event requires an integration of media partners, which advocate and assist society to march on. Without hesitation, I can say The Daily Star, The Prothom Alo and all most all the media have been playing pivotal role in undertaking such big programmes. And more importantly, these media portrays the positive roles of the society and as such others should come forward to display the same, instead of depicting negative aspects of a nation.

As Chairman and Placement Director of Department of Marketing, I should place a request to the media partners, including The Daily Star, to discover new "Stars" who could open up new dimensions for this nation.
