Youth in Action
Nabila Idris

From Feb 20-23, Drik gallery hosted a unique photo exhibition titled, Action: Chobir bhasha, organised by a registered student run charity called CommunityAction (ca-bd.org). Young photographers took creative photos of society's problems, and CommunityAction being a proactive student group, implemented various innovative solutions to these problems.

An eminent panel of judges comprising the founder of Kolpo, Rashid Zaman and international photo journalist Per Liljas gave extraordinary support to the programme. Kumar Bishwojit, a Lecturer of Pharmacy at a private university commented, "CA's theme is wonderful since it made photographers look beyond their usual aesthetic focus and capture society's problems while at the same time raising awareness about the solutions CA is offering".

Music guru Sanjib De graced the exhibition with his presence while veteran of the language movement Oli Ahad gave his kind support for the cause. The event wrapped up with a certificate giving ceremony for the participants.

LANDSCAPE: EXCAVATION THEORY
Md Montasir Islam

Despite the scarcity of land to support our growing population, sufficient effective legal actions are yet to be taken against the unlawful use of land. Wherever possible, influential people are ripping off the poor people's right to land space. In the process, they are also damaging the environment, especially by illegally encroaching on rivers.

THE GREAT DIVIDE
Kazi Riad Omar

With both ends broken, this bridge lacks both an entry and an exit point, and therefore serves as an example of one of the many unsafe bridges in the country which need repair. From a more philosophical point of view, this bridge also illustrates the communication gap among generations that we are being unable to overcome in what we call a very “modern” society.

ACTION: GUARDIANS IN THE DARK

Visually impaired students of even top universities don't have access to Braille books. Actioneers regularly record their study material for them and they study by listening to those tapes.

CELEBRATING VICTORY THROUGH VOLUNTEERISM
Tashfique Nahiyan Alam

An Actioneer provides medical assistance to the elderly as part of our Victory Day celebrations. Every December 16, CommunityAction is proud co-convenor of the biggest campaign of its kind -- where big and small organisations pledge to celebrate Victory Day by doing an act of community service, in keeping with the spirit of the freedom fighters. In 2009, over 40 organisations signed up, while in 2010, over 70 organisations participated.

ACTION: LIGHT UP
Nuruddin Ahmed Bappy

These children of rural Bogura do not have electricity in their village and so had never even seen a television. When Actioneers took a projector, laptop and generator to the village and arranged for educational videos to be projected on to the tin walls of the local school, the children gaped at the miracle! In Action: Light Up, Actioneers encourage rural students to look beyond the boundaries encircling them and let their wildest imagination come true.

IN SEARCH OF LIFE
Dipita Hossain

Women are deprived of the opportunity to lead, or are looked down upon for performing “manly” chores to earn a decent income for her family. This is an exceptional case; among the hundreds of other boats on the river, this was the only boat where the “boatman” was a “boatwoman”.
