Just over a decade ago, Canada's University of Windsor was virtually unknown in Bangladesh. Yet today, Windsor boasts about 600 Bangladeshi graduates the majority of whom now live and work in Canada.

Why Canada?
“Growing up, near the end of my teen years, I strongly believed in freedom and equality. I believed that an honest and hard working person should be able to realize his or her dreams or, at the very least, lead a decent, secure and healthy life. These values, compounded with the need and desire for quality education in science and technology, are the reasons why North America is where I always wanted to be. I chose Canada because of its reputation as a friendly nation and a beautiful country. I am proud to say I've made the right choice.”

On settling in:
“When I first arrived in Canada, I literally saw my life change in front of me. I was no longer living under the shelter of my mom and dad I was completely in charge of my actions. At first I was tense and a bit worried having to face life by myself for the first time. However, I adapted extremely fast and then it was like 'Life in Canada' and I just “clicked”. The transition was smooth and easy for me thanks, in a big part, to some good people. The staff at the International Students Centre, in particular, helped make my academic transition as smooth as possible. The ISC was like the one-stop place where International Students could go. The centre helps international students with academic matters, matters related to visas or study permits, and lots of other issues including help with finding on/off-campus residence.”

On working on-campus:
“I worked in a number of different on-campus positions, starting from my second year. I worked at the International Students Centre as a Peer Counselor from my second year till when I graduated, as the program coordinator for an English Language Improvement Program on campus, and also as a Graduate Assistant for a number of courses at the school of Computer Science. These roles and positions taught me discipline, work ethics, the importance of meeting deadlines, and enhanced my communication skills, as well as my sense of responsibility. They significantly helped in preparing me for life in the real world after university.”

On life after graduation:
“In less than a year after graduating, I landed a job at a company that develops and researches software development, right here in Windsor. Since joining the company, I have held a number of different positions there and I am currently employed as a Software Developer for the team that researches and develops new products.”

“I've also become a Canadian citizen and I am staying in Canada. It's been almost a decade since I came here as a student and overall, life here has been good to me and this place has become a big part of who I am today. This country turned out to be everything that I expected when I first came here. If you're willing to work hard here, you can make a difference in your life as well as the lives of others. Life here is simple and it truly is a beautiful country. For me, it's either Bangladesh or Canada I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else permanently.”
