Roundtable Discussion on Research, Teaching and Learning History

A comprehensive round table meeting was organised for historians and academics from various universities across the US, Europe and Bangladesh on January 2 to examine and explore Bangladesh's involvement with world history as a way of introducing two first level history courses in the English and Humanities Department at BRAC University.

Gathering from the notable keynote speakers as Kris Manjapra of Tufts University, Iftekgar Iqbal of Dhaka University, Tazeen Murshid of the University of Brussels and Firdous Azim, the chairperson of the English and Humanities Department at BRAC University, the vibrant and varied discussion, which followed aptly proffered what a challenging, albeit, exciting task this entailed as the discipline of history opens all kinds of thematic trajectories into other fields of study including feminism, socio-economic politics, Marxism, post-structuralism, environmental studies and postcolonial studies just to name a few.


International Conference held at CUET

To bring together academic scientists, leading engineers, industry researchers, and scholar students to exchange their experiences and research results on Mechanical Engineering and Renewable Energy, Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) has observed a three-day long international conference titled “International conference on Mechanical Engineering and Renewable Energy (ICMERE) 11” which started on December 22.

The conference was organised by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, CUET in collaboration with Bangladesh Society of Mechanical Engineers (BSME). Around two thousand participants from more than 40 universities of home and aboard, distinguished IT professionals, eminent professors, scientists, skilled engineers, media moguls participated in the event.

Nurul Islam Nahid, Honorable minister for Ministry of Education, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh inaugurated the conference as the chief guest. Former vice chancellor of BUET and chairman of BSME Professor M H Khan were present as special guests. Among others Professor Niaz Latif from Pardue University, Washington, Professor Masanory Monde from Saga University, Japan, Professor Tazul Islam, Chairman of the organising committee and Dean of the faculty of Mechanical Engineering were present. Professor Shyamal Kanti Biswas, Vice-Chancellor of CUET presided over the function.

In his speech, the chief guest said “Adopting technology at every sphere of life can lead the country to a higher position. And the young generation has the responsibility to ensure that platform”.


NUB signs MoU with BCS Administration Academy

Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with BCS Administration Academy (BCSAA) on January 1, 2012 at the Academy auditorium. Professor M Shamsul Haque, Vice-Chancellor, NUB and Md Eunusur Rahman, Director General, BCS Administration Academy and Additional Secretary, Ministry of Public Administration signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions.

As per the agreement, BCSAA and NUB will jointly organise a one year programme for next 5 years on 'Masters in Public Policy and Management' for the members of Bangladesh Civil Service with Ministry of Public Administration being the sponsor.

Among others, Syed Ahsanul Hoque, Director, Administration, Ekramul Huq, Director, Training, Shamima Nasrin, Deputy Director, Training, Mohammad Mominur Rahman, Deputy Director, Service, Md Emdadul Hoque, Librarian, Hasan Murtaza Masum, Assistant Director, Training of BCSAA and Kazi Shahdat Kabir, Associate Professor and Chairman of Department of Public Policy and Governance of NUB were also present on the occasion.


Clean NSU Campaign

Earth Club of North South University arranged an event called 'Clean NSU Campaign' on December 11, 2011. The purpose of this event was to create awareness among every student about the bad impacts of littering and the change of habit that we need to bring in ourselves.

The Vice Chancellor of North South University, Dr Hafiz G A Siddiqi, officially inaugurated the event at 10 in the morning. The volunteers were split into groups and each group was assigned to pick up trash in different sections of the campus.

Hundreds of students carrying garbage bags, headed to clean the campus wearing gloves and t-shirt bearing the words “Anti-Littering Squad”. The garbage bags were divided into 3 different categories to collect 'Paper', 'Plastic' and 'Random' waste products respectively. The response from the students was mixed; some admired, some laughed and some had an epiphany that they joined the 'Anti-Littering Squad' right at the spot.

At around 3pm, the event came to a closing with a collection of segregated wastes and volunteers who were students of different disciplines from all over the university campus. Through this event, it was clearly evident that a good number of students are concerned about the environment and they are willing to change their habit.


Graduation Festival and Annual concert of Genetic Engineering Dept. CU

Fresher's festival & Graduation Program of 2011, Department of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology, University Of Chittagong was held on December 17. Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University, Professor, Dr Anwarul Azim Arif inaugurated the ceremony. The Dean of biology faculty, Professor Dr Mohammad Nural Anwar was the special guest. A M Abu Ahmed, Professor Dr Mohammad-Al-Forkan, A M Masudul Azad Chowdhury, Dr Lolo- Wal-Marzan,Dr Nazneen Naher Islam, Adnan Mannan delivered their speech on the ceremony. Two students of the department, Mehjabeen Hossain & Tajmila Akter, hosted the program. To encourage the students of the department, “Awards of Excellence” was given to -Bashudev Rurda, Zinat Farjana & Zakir Hossain, Yasmin Ali and Omar Faruk Sikder. Best student award went to Sabrina Shameen Alam, a graduate student. Besides these, “Award of Honor” was given to Professor Dr. Mohammad-Al-Forkan and Dr.Lolo-Wal- Marzan for research excellence.

The main attraction of the program, the short film, “Osthir Valobasha” dircted by Rashel Alam, a student of the department. Afrin,Shipon, Mehedi, Johny, Sarwar, Hamim along with many more students acted in the short film. This Short film brought a new dimention to the program
