The carnival consisted of many different activities for the students.

'General human->become->RESOURCES', 'HR--where human is the most valuable resource, make your career here!', 'HR -- Take the challenge…Face the challenge…', 'Right use of human resource can sail the ship smoothly'-- these were some of the eye-catching slogans on the posters made and exhibited through the three day-long AIUB HR carnival 2012 that took place from March 19-21 at the American International University Bangladesh (AIUB). Al-Haj Nur Mohammed, Chairman, Jamuna Bank Foundation, inaugurated the carnival as the chief guest. Md Motior Rahman, Managing Director, Jamuna Bank Ltd was present as the special guest. Al-Haj Nur Mohammed, in his speech, stated that by building up qualified human resources we can keep up with the developed world. Then he highlighted different social initiatives of Jamuna Bank. A colourful rally started from the main campus of AIUB where faculties and students of AIUB participated.

Organised by the AIUB Society for HR, the carnival contained a good number of seminars and workshops on various fundamental models and theories of HR, talk show, mini job fair for the HR students, movie screening, quiz, game shows, competitions, exhibitions, cultural programmes and much more. AIUB Mastermind 2012 was a general knowledge competition that aimed to stimulate interest for HR (the field of study related to human resources) among all students of AIUB.

An illuminating feature of this carnival was the mini HR job fair which was arranged on the first day of the carnival. A total of four companies participated and interviewed hundreds of students. The companies were Bextex, Citycell, Akkhan Water Health International and BRAC NGO.

The second day contained interesting workshops namely, workshop on 'Turtle Model of HR', workshop on 'Mirror', Workshop on 'Winning interview techniques' conducted by Md Mizanur Rahman, Talent Management Manager, Linde Bangladesh Limited, Alam Ishraq Chowdhury, Manager, Remuneration and Benefits, Sanofi-aventies Bd Ltd and Riyad Hossain, HR DGM, Danish Partex Star Group respectively.

Jareen Simin Raisa, an executive member of the AIUB Society for HR and student of sixth semester in the department of Business Administration shares, “Proper dressing, hand shaking, sitting postures, speaking to the point are prerequisites of winning an interview. Things like importance of knowing the company and Strength Weakness Opportunity Threat (SWOT) analysis were also explained in the workshop on winning interview techniques which I found extremely helpful."

One wonders what the turtle model of HR is! Raisa says, “Generally HR department of any company is considered to be lazy and that is why it is compared to turtles. Our stomach seems idle compared to other organs. But if the stomach doesn't function properly the whole body becomes inactive. This notion was highlighted in the "Workshop on Turtle Model of HR.”

Naima Afroze Sultana, another executive and student of 7th semester, shares how she found the workshop on 'mirror' best suited her. “It's like knowing your strengths and weaknesses, so that you can design and present yourself properly, which is very important in HR.”

The closing ceremony included prize distribution among the winners of the competitions. Hafsa Maryam, faculty member, Department of Management and HRM hosted the ceremony. She chalked out a brief history, mission and vision of the AIUB Society for HR. She said that the HR Carnival is an annual event and it is a union of the Human Resource Department, the students, alumni's and faculty members. During this time period various events are held that allows the whole HR Department to communicate and strengthen their network with various other departments and also with other universities.

Prizes were distributed among the winners of the business plan competition, poster competition, and Mastermind competition. Team 'Evaluation' stood the champion in the Mastermind competition. The leader of this team Tarikul Islam Shuvo shared that he feels confident to do something remarkable for the first time in his life. Naveed Shansed, another member of this group was the first runners up of the Business Plan competition as well. Their project was 'Cherry Bomb', an energy drink only for women. 'We salute women power', 'Experience the sweetness over rough surface', 'Where the boldness meets with beauty', with such sparkling taglines they won the hearts of judges.

Hafsa Maryam thanked all the sponsors and media partners for their cooperation. Represen-tatives from all the media partners were honoured with crests. Farheen Hassan, Assistant Professor, Head in Charge Managemant and HRM Department, Faculty of Business Administration, AIUB shares, “The core objective of arranging this carnival was to provide our students with a major or minor in HR, with a corporate exposure and prepare them for recruitment in future.” The platinum and the gold sponsor of this event were Jamuna Bank ltd and Seven Rings Cement respectively, and the media partners were Rtv, People's Radio and The Daily Star.
