Workshop on 'IGW and Next Generation Voice Network' at DIU

To enrich students' knowledge over International Gateway (IGW) and voice network, Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (ETE), Faculty of Science and Information Technology of Daffodil International University (DIU) organised a workshop on 'IGW and Next Generation Voice Network' recently at their premises. Md Abu Saleh, Assistant Engineer, Department of IP Telephony, NMD, Advanced Data Networks System Limited was present as the keynote speaker.

The workshop was presided over by Professor Dr Md Fayzur Rahman, Head, Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, DIU.


NUB VC joined 'Asian University Presidents Forum-2012'

Professor Dr M Shamsul Haque, Vice Chancellor, Northern University Bangladesh (NUB), joined the 11th Asian University Presidents Forum 2012 (AUPF) at Dongseo University, Busan, Korea, held from October 28-31, 2012. Participated by 72 Presidents and Vice-Chancellors of different universities from 17 countries in Asia, the conference was held on the theme, 'The Era of Asia: Creating a Cooperative Network of Asian Universities in Various Sessions'. Professor Haque presented a paper on 'Challenges in providing higher education to millions in Bangladesh.'


English Language Proficiency Course (ELPC) at UAP

The English Language Proficiency Course (ELPC) for fall 2012, organised by the Department of English, University of Asia Pacific (UAP) concluded and certificates were given to the participants on October 22, 2012. Professor Dr M R Kabir, Pro Vice-Chancellor, UAP handed the certificates. Among others, Professor S M Amanullah, Head, Department of English, the two course instructors--Suraiya Alam and Nazia Hussain, faculty members of the Department of English, invited guests and students were present on the occasion.

The course included intensive training on all four basic skills for learning a language. Out of 32 participating students, 22 came out successful and were given certificates after final assessment. Khan Mahmud Reyan, a student of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Fahmida Nasrin, a student of the Department of Pharmacy jointly topped the merit list.


Foodography Competition by Dhaka Foodies

With the theme 'Real people, Real reviews,' Dhaka Foodies, the online food magazine was launched in July, 2012. Since their launch, Dhaka Foodies has taken several initiatives to promote love through food. One such initiative was Foodography competition, the first ever food photography competition in Dhaka. Held from November 8-10, 2012 at the Dhaka Art Center in Dhanmondi, this exhibition showcased the top 50 contestants of the online Photography contest organised by Dhaka Foodies where almost 500 entries came from all over the world.

Prominent figures such as Syed Zakir Hossain, Pallab Mohaimen and Hassan Bipul were present. The winners got prizes including Nokia Pureview 808, Panasonic camera and vouchers of restaurants in Dhaka.


Seminar on Organic Farming

A seminar titled 'Organic Farming in Bangladesh: Potentials and Challenges' was held at the conference room of Agriculture Faculty of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) on November 3, 2012. Bangladesh Society for Organic Farming and Safe Food (BSOFSF) organised the seminar.

Andrew Li, President of International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement was the chief guest while Vice-Chancellor of BAU, Professor Dr Md Rafiqul Hoque was the chief patron. President of BSOFSF, Professor Dr Md Ismail Hossain presided over the seminar. Professor Dr Md Asaduzzaman Sarkar, Professor Dr M A Rahim, Professor Dr M Hashem, Professor Dr M Salam and Md Abdullah Iqbal addressed the seminar.


Evening with Iresh Zaker

BRAC University Film Club (BUFC) arranged an informal get-together evening of students and celebrities known as 'Kothopokothon' and the guest star in this semester was Iresh Zaker.

The event kicked off with an introduction by the President of the club, Irfanul Haque and was hosted by two of the club's members. Describing himself as an 'actor by accident,' Iresh shed some light on his life and how he got into acting. Although he is famous on Television, he said that he would like to go for acting full-time in films because that is where talent is appreciated. He was asked what it is like to act and he responded by saying that when he is in front of the camera, it is like magic and all else do not matter at that moment as he gets indulged in the story being the character. He suggested that one must respect whatever role he or she plays. That is how you can prove yourself to audience.


Bangladesh on Seven Summits

The Flag-Off ceremony for 'Wasfia Nazreen's 2012 Vinson Massif Expedition' was held at 6:30 pm on November 8, 2012 at the BRAC Centre Auditorium. Wasfia Nazreen, the Bangladeshi female mountaineer has taken up the challenge of climbing the highest mountains of each of the seven continents, in celebration of 40 years of women's progress. As part of this campaign titled 'Bangladesh on Seven Summits,' she has successfully completed three continents, including the recent most Everest. As the next step, she is starting her journey to climb Vinson Massif, the remotest of the seven summits and highest mountain of Antarctica.

BRAC, bKash and BRAC Bank have cordially agreed to support this expedition. In the last 40 years, BRAC has made a remarkable journey of highlighting human victory against formidable odds. Especially, unleashing women's potential has been one of its core objectives. In this 40th year of its existence, BRAC proudly celebrates the odyssey of empowerment for Bangladeshi women and supports Wasfia in making history as a Bangladeshi woman.

BRAC has also decided to collaborate with Wasfia Nazreen by making her its Goodwill Ambassador for the next one year. During this one year, she will work for cause of women empowerment and motivate, encourage and inspire the young women leaders of the country. National cricket players-- Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, and Khushi Kabir, Coordinator, Nijera Kori, were the special guests, while Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, Chairperson of BRAC, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour.
