IBA Inter University Quiz Competition 2012

To encourage the young minds in their pursuit of knowledge and to bring the legendary quizzing jewels together in the same platform for unleashing their acumen, IBA Communications Club (IBACC), the pool of the future leaders of the country organised the first ever Inter University Quiz Competition for the undergraduate students of Bangladesh on November 22, 2012.

Teams consisting of 3-5 students from different institutions were invited to participate in this competition. As the deadline was approaching, students from varied academic discipline showed interest in joining the battle of knowledge. Finally, eleven teams from University of Dhaka (IBA, Economics Department and Finance Department), Jahangirnagar University (IBA), Sir Salimullah Medical College, Dhaka Medical College, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), Islamic University of Technology (IUT) and United International University (UIU) took part in the competition.

The quizmasters were Dr Abdun Nur Tushar, a remarkable quiz personality and a renowned media personality; Ferdous Bappy, another prominent media personality best known for his excellent contribution to the quiz fraternity; Rifat Haider, the president of Quizzers' Bangladesh; Fabian Khan, former member of the Notre Dame Gold Quiz team and television quizzer and Sharif Abu Hayat Opu, the general secretary of 'Quizzer's Bangladesh'.

After the preliminary round, six out of the eleven teams made it to the next rounds. The six teams were from IBA (University of Dhaka), IBA (Jahangirnagar University), Dhaka Medical College, BUET, Economics Department (University of Dhaka) and Bangladesh University of Professionals. These teams went through another eight cliff-hanging rounds, which finally reached a suspenseful tiebreaker. After a neck and neck fight, Team Spectrum from IBA, Jahangirnagar University became the champion and Team 'Economics DU' from the Economics Department of Dhaka University became the Runners up.

Sponsored by Pride and supported by Prothom Alo, this event is not just another inter-university competition; the organisers hope that this event shows the way for other universities to arrange similar competitions and remind quizzers of the kick of quizzing they sorely missed.
