The Mother of Churches

Zahedul I Khan

Established by the Portuguese in 1611, Rani Jopmala church in Tejgoan is the oldest unharmed church in the subcontinent. With an illustrious history behind its back, the church has been the silent witness to many historical events. In ancient times the Rani Jopmala was known as the Mother of Churches; it also gets a honourable mention in French traveller Jean-Baptiste Tavernier's famous book. The old building, however, has newly been renovated, it can now house 1500 devotees at a mass. Fifty-four feet tall, the 332-year-old church is going to celebrate the diversity of our culture this Christmas.
