To Walk the Walk

Salman Rob

Forrest Gump says, “Mama always said you could tell an awful lot about a person by the kind of shoes they wear.” And you actually can. There are many ways to be fashionable with your footwear and be comfortable at the same time, if you know what to look for.

"What becomes of the broken-hearted? They buy shoes!”- Mimi Pond, writer and cartoonist.

Summer brings out daring choices in shoes and as the heat hits the campus many students go berserk on what to wear and what not to wear. Shoes play a major role in this season. The dilemma itself is crazy - should I wear sneakers or should I just go for sandals? And then there is the mix and match dilemma - how to match your clothes with the right footwear. Like it says in the movie,Forrest Gump, “Mama always said you could tell an awful lot about a person by the kind of shoes they wear.” And you actually can. There are many ways to be fashionable with your footwear and comfortable at the same time, if you know what to look for.

For students, sneakers are always the best choice for summer, because you never know when you need to be on the run, for the rain in Dhaka City is actually very unpredictable. Nowadays, a large number of brands are available in the city. Vans is the next best thing a student can wear to campus as well as casual hangouts. The best thing about vans is that you can wear it with almost anything, starting from jeans, shorts, skirts and what not. So yes, girls can wear them too! And colourful vans can look very funky on girls if pulled off right. If you are looking for cheap but cool and comfortable pairs of vans, then head out to Elephant Road and check out the variety of summer footwear, which are mostly worth less than Tk 1200. The shoes are reasonable and buying a couple of pairs would help you mix and match for the rest of the season.

There are a few, however, who wouldn't compromise on comfort. For those, the best buy would be a pair of 'Reebok' running shoes, which are available in the outlets in the city.

These shoes are not only comfortable but also super trendy and can go with a pair of jeans or jersey shorts. A pair of these would last for years and you can be sure it would never go out of style. But if you are looking for something more reasonable, Bata is a great choice. Since they are now affiliated with a lot of other brands from around the world, you can get a large number of choices on what to buy -- stylish and at the same time comfortable.

Low top and high top converse have been in for a long time now. And they still rule the streets! The best part about them is they come in countless colours and designs. Converse is widely available at Elephant Road, Bongobondhu Stadium and almost at all the shopping malls in the city. But if you are looking for the real 'Chuck Taylor All Star' shoes, then buying a pair from abroad would be wiser because they take a long time to wear out. So, if you are bored and need to go out to chill and look good at the same time, wear a low converse and put on some checks with something bright on top, and you are good to go!
