Celebrating Passion

Rakibul Hasan

In celebration of its 15th year anniversary, the 'Photographic society of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology' (BUETPS) arranged a three-day long photography exhibition titled 'Transcendence Beyond Time, Celebrating 15 years of photographic excellence in BUET'. The exhibition featured 50 skilfully selected photographs taken by the prominent photographers from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

Since its foundation in 1998, BUETPS has grown up as one of the most significant and popular cultural and co-curricular bodies in the roster of clubs and student-associations that BUET harbours. The regular activity of this noted photography club involves arranging photo-discussions, workshops and an annual photography exhibition adorned by the works of the students and faculty members of BUET. The club currently consists of more than 300 members and many active alumni. To celebrate its 15th birthday in a befitting manner, this year the club planned to draw the attention of a large audience by stepping out of BUET premises and arranged its annual photography exhibition in Drik Gallery, Dhanmondi, Dhaka.

The theme and genre of the photographs exhibited in the event were diverse in nature starting from landscape, portraits to abstract and street photography. Hridoy Tanveer, a student from the Department of Civil Engineering, BUET and a dedicated member of BUETPS says, “At BUETPS, we arrange a number of activities like photo walks, photo discussions for the promising photographers on a regular basis. Now on the occasion of our 15th anniversary, we are celebrating the passionate works of our present and previous members through a range of magnificent events starting with this exhibition. Plus, there will be more events to come in the near future where we are expecting a reunion of young and olds, all of whom share a love for photography." An enthusiast of street photography, Hridoy exhibited two photographs in the event - 'they never take a break' and 'watch your steps', both of which reflect the life in the streets of Old Dhaka. Ananya Rubayat, another student photographer from BUETPS says, “I believe photographers can express themselves better though their photos than their words. I think that exhibitions like this one also helps to break certain stereotypes perceived by many -- such as engineering students are all about books and no fun.”

The exhibition was inaugurated on June 12, 2012 and continued till June 14, 2012 from 3 pm to 8 pm. The opening ceremony of the exhibition had Nishat Majumdar, the first ever Bangladeshi female to conquer Mount Everest and M A Mohit, another noted mountaineer and Mount Everest conqueror as guests.
