Medical Students making a Difference

Zeeshan Alam

Bangladesh Medical Students' Society is an arena where all the medical students of Bangladesh can work as a team and help to make the country free from the deadly diseases that threaten the health status of Bangladesh, and the world at large. BMSS believes in building individual leadership amongst medical students. It provides platform for medical students of different medical colleges of the country and international organisations, for cultural exchange and bridging the gap among them.

The 1st General Assembly of BMSS was held on June 8, 2012 at Dr Anwar Hossain Auditorium of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, Agargaon. Students from more than 10 medical colleges within Dhaka and the country participated in the assembly. Some Students even showed up from Khulna and Chittagong. It was overwhelming for all of us.

Medicines are not always good for health as we think they are. To give us a better understanding of such an issue, Professor Subhagoto Chowdhury Director, BIRDEM, spoke on the matter. Medicines are necessary for a stable health, but it does not overrule the fact, that it can be catastrophic if taken in wrong dosage. As Professor Subhagato said, “The history of antibiotics has repeated itself: drugs are discovered, but bacterial evolution can soon render them ineffective in treating infections. Resistance is fueled by injudicious use of existing drugs and compounded by a failure to develop new ones.” Professor Shubhagato shared his experiences, which certainly encouraged the aspiring doctors to be more responsible and careful .

The four hour long interactive sessions ended with a positive note. The ideas and experiences we gathered from this assembly will pave the way for the professional development of the students, to be better, more caring and efficient professionals when it comes to saving lives.

The plenary session was presided by the Central Committee and the Election Commission of BMSS. Being the Member of International Federation Of Medical Students Association, its Bangladesh Chapter introduced its new President Muhtamim Chowdhury Zubin and Secretary General Shihab Arefin Chowdhury. BMSS Central Executive Committee will be going on regional trips outside Dhaka as well. BMSS would like to give a special acknowledgement to all those who had worked relentlessly for the event, especially to Shihab, Muinul Islam and Dr Khondoker Moin and Tanveer.
