It is a common phenomenon amongst the Bangladeshis of this generation, to fall head over heels for proteins and carbohydrates! Although, a majority of young people claim to be health conscious, on the contrary they prove themselves to be other wise, by expressing their deep love for items like burgers and pizzas. One such eatery that is often on the top of the list of any young, university going student is, the vintage American Burger. Located in prime locations like Gulshan, Banani, Bashundhara, Uttara, Dhanmondi, and a few other areas, the place is ideal for those who are voracious eaters!
American Burger, unlike other restaurants has a very selective menu, to ensure quality food that can be served fresh to its customers. Items on the menu range from different types of burger made from beef, chicken and fish patties. The beef cheese burger costs Tk 150, while the chicken cheese burger costs, Tk 165. Fish burgers range from Tk 130 to 240 depending on the ingredients and toppings used. In addition, over the years, American Burger has expanded and ventured into exploring other mouth-watering items, like pizzas, sandwiches, and shawarmas. Drinks are also available, like milk shake and iced tea costing around Tk 70.
Another great thing about this particular eatery is the flexible timings. It opens at 9:00 am and closes between 10:00 pm to 12:00 am at night. This enables students from different areas to come and eat here at their convenience. Particularly, for students who study in universities, the various branches of American Burger serve as a great choice for a quick take-away on their way home.

Pizza, iced tea and shawarma are some of the other items available.
Additionally, young romantics, who live nearby and enjoy taking a stroll down the street, often, come by to grab a heavy meal consisting of a beef patty, 'warmly' placed between two layers of a bun. Moreover, if someone isn't really bothered about gaining the extra pounds because he knows he will burn it back on their way home, then he can opt for the double cheese burger which simply melts in the mouth. This goes hand in hand with crispy French fries and a glass of cold iced tea which is a brilliant combination for the hot, summer days!
Mahbub Alam, a student of Engineering from University of Asia Pacific explains, “American Burger has the best grilled burger in the city. The double beef and cheese burger which costs Tk 230 is simply amazing. Plus, it's really difficult to find a place which has a hygienic kitchen where the food is prepared right in front of the customers.”
On the other hand, Iffat Zhahn, who recently finished her high school and is exploring her options at various public and private universities, is unique in her own way and states, “I come here with my friends as it is close by. The item I eat the most is the beef shawarma which costs 120 taka. The taste of this item is very different from those served at other places, mostly because of the filling inside the wrap. It is meaty, and at the same time, healthy.”
Today's Bangladeshis are in some sense, real food scavengers. So, places like this make it to their top favourites, just because of the price but also because of the quality of the food and the atmosphere in which it is served in. If you are in the look out for a meal filled with richness, then American Burger is certainly the right place!

Alfred Nobel

Chemist, Engineer, Inventor and founder of the Nobel Prize, Alfred Bernhard Nobel was born in Stockholm, on October 21, 1833 (would have turned 179 today!). His family was impoverished but he was always very interested in engineering, particularly explosives, learning the basic principles from his father at a young age. His parents were able to send him to private tutors and the boy excelled in his studies, particularly in chemistry and languages, achieving fluency in English, French, German, and Russian. For 18 months, during 1841-1842, Nobel went to the only school he ever attended as a child, the Jacobs Apologistic School in Stockholm. As a young man, Nobel studied with chemist Nikolai Zinin; then, in 1850, went to Paris to further the work; and, at 18, he went to the United States for four years to study chemistry, collaborating for a short period under inventor John Ericsson, who designed the American Civil War ironclad USS Monitor. Nobel filed his first patent, for a gas meter, in 1857. Nobel invented dynamite in 1867. He was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1884, the same institution that would later select laureates for two of the Nobel prizes, and he received an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in 1893.
