The Sky is the Limit

The Spotlight titled 'Like a Diamond in the Sky' by Sumaiya Ahsan Bushra published on the October 7, 2012, issue of Star Campus was really an inspiring one. People usually praise high achievements like conquering a high mountain or discovering a new medicine. However, the achievements of those young individuals who, despite a lot of obstacles, braved all odds and scored a perfect GPA in SSC and HSC examinations are as praiseworthy as the achievements of a mountaineer or a scientist. These students have proved that nothing is impossible if one stays focused and works hard to attain a goal. I thank the BRAC bank and the Prothom Alo trust for helping these indomitable sprits. I firmly believe that these students can do more wonders with their talents if they get the necessary assistance from the society.

For a Just Society

Bangladesh has always been famous in the world as a peaceful country. People of different beliefs are living in this country for thousands of years. However, antisocial forces have also been active in our society to spoil the state of harmony that prevails amongst us. The attacks on Buddhist temples and houses in Ramu, Ukhiya and Teknaf are examples of such antisocial efforts. We strongly protest this barbaric act. To voice out concerns against such acts of communal violence, the teachers and students of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies of Dhaka University recently formed a human chain in front of the 'Oparajayo Bangla' statue in Dhaka University campus. The culprits responsible for attacking religious minorities should get exemplary punishment for the sake of peace and religious harmony in the society.

The Benefits of Social Media

Social networking websites are becoming increasingly popular amongst the youth of Bangladesh. Nowadays, almost everyone has an account on different social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter and so on. Thanks to the social media, we can now maintain virtual contacts with most of our friends from school, college and universities. Finding long lost friends on Facebook always fills our hearts with joy. As a result, a virtual community of friends has formed where everybody can know the whereabouts of each other on a regular basis. The social media has provided us with faster and cheaper communication. However, people should refrain from spending all their time on social media and be aware of the misuse of social networking websites.

Of Achievements and Failures

Many years ago, people like Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi preached ideas of equality and non-violence to the humankind. It is a matter of great pride for us that the very foundation of Bangladesh is based on the principles of equality, secularism and freedom of expression. Bangladesh has successfully established itself as a peace loving country in the world arena. However, all these achievements were blurred by the recent attack on the people of the Buddhist community in Ramu, Cox's Bazar. The attack was not only a threat to our cultural heritage but also a severe blow to our unity as a nation. The youth of Bangladesh should raise their voices against such heinous acts of communal violence. It is high time that our government takes necessary steps to uphold the constitutional rights of every Bangladeshi citizen and punish those culprits who are against the spirit of our Liberation War.
