In Search of Hope

Last week's spotlight titled 'On the Lookout: Stories to Inspire' was a very inspiring piece of writing. Sometimes evil forces become so powerful that they jeopardise the peace of our society. But even during those dark times, some extraordinary individuals show us flickers of hope. People like Masudul Amin Rintu of Red Blood group and Masud Rana from Ramu, Cox's Bazar, are such extraordinary young individuals. Amidst all the mayhem, these young people relentlessly worked for the sake of peace. We need more young individuals like them to keep up the spirit of humanity alive and to create a better Bangladesh.

For an Enlightened Nation

Thanks to Promiti Prova Chowdhury for her wonderful Spotlight titled 'Emancipation through Knowledge' published on October 21, 2012. Libraries are indeed storehouses of knowledge. However, the number of libraries in both urban and rural areas of our country is not enough. I think students should come forward to establish new libraries. Especially, students who live in Dhaka can buy books in an economical rate from book stores in Nilkhet or Banglabazar and then they should donate those books to set up new libraries in their native villages. In this way we can form numerous libraries all over the country and can educate our future generations accordingly.

Perils on Roads

Nowadays, roads are becoming increasingly unsafe due to the recklessness of both drivers and pedestrians. It seems that nobody cares about the traffic rules anymore. Vehicle drivers do not abide by the traffic signals while the pedestrians are reluctant to use the foot over-bridges while crossing busy roads. As a result, the number of casualties from road accidents is increasing every year. Only last month alone, multiple students from different public and private universities have died in road accidents. The death of a student in a road accident always results in vandalising and violent protest for a week or two but there hasn't been an effective policy from the government to reduce the number of road accidents. I believe that, if people are a little more conscious while driving a vehicle or walking on roads, the number of casualties can be decreased to a great extent.

Letting the Youth Grow

The article 'Of Hope and Dismays' by Rakibul Hasan published in the October 14, 2012, issue of Star campus was a thought provoking one. Though the youth is supposed to bring about a better future, our politicians are spoiling the very future of our youth by maintaining student fractions of the political parties in university campuses. The major political parties of our country use the members of their student wings as mercenaries against their rivals. As a result, the university campuses have become an arena of power politics rather than a place to create and impart knowledge. If we are to grow as a nation then our universities should be freed from the leashes of evil student politics and our youth should be given enough incentives to grow to their full potentials.
