Inner wheels

A photofeature by Gazi Nafis Ahmed

The inner wheels that have made a vibrant and hugely successful industry out of readymade garments, are the garment workers themselves. It is an irony that those who have helped create immense wealth for others, face financial hardship themselves.

The trend of not paying salaries to workers appears to be spreading -- leaving many workers living on the edge, forced to work overtime, and leading their lives half fed and ill-clad. This, within an industry that is one of the largest foreign exchange earners in Bangladesh.
