The vicious beating of opposition leader Saber Hossain Chowdhury in September was merely the most shocking example of the police brutality that has long been a shameful feature of the Bangladeshi political landscape. The police have a tough job to do, keeping the peace in volatile times, and we extend our full support to all conscientious police personnel who put their lives on the line to keep the public safe. However, when law enforcers turn law-breakers and themselves foment violence, then they desecrate their noble calling, and we are all endangered.
